Q: What is a DMO?
A Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) is the official entity responsible for promoting a county or community to visitors. It tells our story, drives traffic to local businesses, and coordinates tourism efforts that no single business, town, or agency could pull off alone. It can be the engine behind a coordinated marketing and economic development campaign, not just a logo and a brochure.

Q: Why does McDonald County need one?
Before now, tourism promotion here was very scattered: individual towns, businesses, and events all pulled in different directions with no unified voice. A DMO changes that. It lets us market the entire county as one destination, compete for state and federal tourism dollars that require DMO status to even apply, and build the professional marketing infrastructure - which can include a website, branding, visitor data, and so forth that turns curious travelers into paying customers. DMOs are the entities responsible for promoting a place to attract visitors and support the local economy. Without one, McDonald County leaves that opportunity and that money on the table.

Q: How are DMOs typically funded?
Nationally, roughly 93% of DMO funding comes from various public or government sources.  Cities and counties frequently provide direct budget allocations because the return on tourism investment is well-documented. In other words: seed funding from local government is the industry norm, not the exception.  It can unlock the larger public and private dollars that follow.

Q: Why did the County contribute $20,000?
That $20,000 wasn't a donation. it was seed capital. While nationally, 93% of funding comes from public sources, in our case, that number is closer to 33% as the Chamber has committed to fund the lion share.  We were required by the County to submit an 8-page document explaining how we wanted the DMO operate and what their funds would be used for. In this case, we indicated the funds would go to sharing the cost of the position which is required by the state to have a DMO. They also mandated we need to submit a quarterly report showing progress. It has given the Chamber and County the standing and infrastructure to formally qualify as a DMO (McDonald County not only earned the designation in record time but was also one of smallest counties in Missouri to achieve that status).  It is already paying dividends: $37,500 in grant funding secured so far, nearly double the County's investment, with more in the pipeline. That money is helping build a countywide tourism website, a professional marketing foundation, and a communication network connecting every town, business, and event in the county.

The bottom line: The County's $20K didn't just fund a marketing effort, it unlocked outside dollars our local businesses could never access on their own, and it positioned McDonald County to compete for tourism investment the same way our larger neighbors do. Every dollar the County put in is already working harder than a dollar spent almost anywhere else in the budget.
