Homemade Boat Race Rules

  • All boats/rafts must be homemade.

  • No commercially manufactured hulls.

  • All boats/rafts must be self-propelled, (i.e., poles, oars, paddlewheels, sails, etc.) or any combination thereof.

  • The deck must be capable of supporting the weight of the crew.

  • All boats/rafts utilizing styrofoam must have the styrofoam completely enclosed to avoid littering the river.

  • All sheet metal raw edges must be turned over and taped. All protruding long bolts to be sawed off, filed, and taped.

  • At least one crew member must have been responsible for the construction of the homemade vessel.

  • Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • For any "shortcut" to be legal, it must have a flow of river water through it. Overland portages are not allowed.

  • Contestants are required to provide for themselves a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device and said device must be easily accessible.

  • Except for those portages specified by the race committee, canoes must remain in the river. All illegal portaging will disqualify the team. There will be checkers along the riverbank at unspecified points.

  • No one is allowed to help convey a contestant or his equipment although the contestant may pick up food, water, or extra paddles during the race.

  • Prior to a race, no contestant will touch or move any other contestant's boat or equipment without permission.

  • If any doubt exists to the physical condition of the contestants, the race committee reserves the right to demand a physical examination.

  • Racers may not hinder another racer or boat in any way. No boat-to-boat or person-to-person contact will be allowed. Violation of this rule may result in disqualification. Final decision to made by the judges and cannot be appealed.

  • Water balloons and squirt guns are not only allowed, but encouraged! However, no water balloon propulsion devices will be allowed.
